Tips On How To Stop Suffering Fro Back Pain

When it comes to back pain, the intensity of symptoms can range anywhere from dull and tolerable to acute, agonizing pain. The condition can also affect the upper, middle, or lower section of the back or even all three areas. Fortunately, the advice in this article will offer insight into the nature of this condition.

To help prevent or alleviate back pain, try walking each day. Research has indicated that walking helps relieve back pain, whereas doing specific exercises meant to alleviate back pain may actually make the pain worse. Although your back may hurt, it is important to walk briskly for three hours per week to obtain relief.

Many claim that strengthening the abdominal muscles can actually help to prevent against back pain and even relieve existing back pain. This is because the abdominals stretch around your side and back and aren't just those "washboard" muscles in your lower stomach. If you strengthen this group of muscles, you can prevent back pain.

Learning to lift properly can save yourself a lot of back pain in the future. Learning to lift from the knees instead of just bending over to lift will greatly reduce the strain on your back. This will keep your back from being over exerted and help you keep your back from developing pain earlier.

When dealing with back pain, it's always a great idea to ensure that your weight is distributed evenly when standing. Do not put more weight on one leg than the other. Of course, you cannot avoid this while walking, but while standing, maintain good posture and even weight distribution to help with back pain.

Try physical therapy. If you think that your back pain has been caused by some recent trauma to your back, a physical therapist can help you strengthen your back so you can get full function back again. It can also be helpful to have someone supportive helping you with your back.

You can become a victim of chronic back pain, simply by practicing poor posture. To avoid this type of pain, focus on sitting straight at work or school and keep shoulders back while walking. In these days of technology, we rely on computers and end up with poor posture. Surfing the net can be the biggest culprit of all, when it comes to increased back pain!

Placing moist heat on the effected area of your back is going to help you manage your pain. This method has been used for many years and has proven to be quite helpful in the management of pain suffered in many areas of the body. Apply it directly to the skin and the tension should be reduced.

Whether your discomfort is confined to a single area of your back or affects the upper, middle, and lower areas, following the advice in this article will offer you some degree of relief. Remain positive and remember that there are a variety of options available to diagnose, treat, and possibly even prevent back pain.

Acupressure and Migraines

Acupressure and Migraines

Acupressure is a completely non-invasive treatment option that has a high success rate among migraineurs (people who suffer from migraine headaches). It has a proven track record as a successful pain abatement technique. Acupressure is also efficacious in reducing both the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are over 800 vital energy points in the human body. These points lie along meridians that run throughout a person’s body. Chi, or life energy, flows along the meridians and through the energy points in healthy people. Chi that is blocked or overabundant near particular energy points causes illness and pain.
Acupressure massage applies pressure to these energy points in order to release chi and stimulate the body’s own healing mechanisms. The energy points are massaged with the fingers, thumb, or occasional blunt object with medium pressure in a circular pattern.
The simplest acupressure a migraineur can learn is an all-over head massage. This technique just requires the practitioner to massage the scalp as though they were washing their hair. Sit with the elbows resting on a table to prevent arm strain and the head resting lightly in the hands to perform head and neck acupressure.

Moderate pressure applied to the GB20 points offers the best relief for migraine pain. They are on either side of the neck, approximately one inch to each side of the spinal column just below where the skull and neck muscles connect. GB20 also goes by the more romantic-sounding Chinese name “The Gates of Consciousness”.

Migraineurs seeking to relieve their headache and neck pain should practice deep breathing while using the thumbs of both hands to press firmly on the GB20 points for one to two minutes. If this is painful at first, home practitioners can start out by pressing and releasing the points in five to fifteen second intervals.

Accident Injury Claims Done Right

When dealing with a car accident, finding and hiring a qualified attorney can help you a great deal. They will help ease your mind through dealing with all the legal aspects of your situation while you focus on coping with the pain and suffering of such a traumatic event. There are lawyers out there ready and willing to make sure that you are compensated for being hurt in a situation that you may not have had any control over.

Never hesitate after an accident when seeking medical and legal help. Many people don’t know until much later that they even have an injury after a car accident. They are usually so scared and rattled that if they feel okay enough, they go home and sleep it off and try to reestablish normal activities the next day. Or, if they are in pain, they might seek the advice of family and friends who may tell them not to worry, that it is just neck pain and it will go away with time. This is all really bad advice. There could be internal injuries that over time could become major or even life threatening problems.

A very serious problem that is often overlooked is an internal head injury. Just because a car crash victims head is not bleeding, does not mean that they are okay. Closed head injuries often occur some time after the accident and can go unnoticed and often occur when a car crash victim’s head is sudden thrust into a hard surface (steering wheel, dashboard, back of the front seat) at rapid speeds. These types of injuries often do not penetrate the skull and can be overlooked at first. These types of collisions result in internal injuries within the brain.

Even whiplash can cause a closed head injury. Other types of closed head injuries include bleeding from the head or face, confusion, lethargy, loss of hearing or fluid drainage from the nose or ears.

Another, more traumatic injury caused by car accidents is permanent or temporary paralysis. Paralysis occurs when the vital nerves that control various body parts are damaged or severed. This happens when there is a traumatic impact to the neck or spinal cord resulting in parts of the body not being able to retain the same mobility or sensations that they once had.

When paralysis occurs, it can be an extremely difficult time for the victim and his/her family. They are faced with life long challenges and may need constant round-the-clock care for the rest of their lives. Temporary paralysis occurs when a nerve is pinched or inflamed. In any case, seek help quickly. Don’t hesitate. You may be entitled to seek compensation for your injuries. It is important that you contact a qualified car accident attorney today and get a case review.

Complementary Therapy The Route To Better Back Health

The following post Complementary Therapy The Route To Better Back Health was originally published to: Wellness In Motion Chiropractic Service Blog

Complementary Therapy The Route To Better Back Health

Find Out How to Reduce and Eliminate Chronic Back Pain Using Non-Traditional Therapy
Complementary therapy is concerned with health and wellness from a mind, body and spirit approach. As a past sufferer of back pain resulting from injury and a congenital disorder, I understand how challenging it can be to live with back pain.
The GOOD news is you don*t have to. Studies actually suggest that most chronic back pain can be relieved in just six short weeks.
Among the essential strategies for eliminating back pain include exercise and movement. A progressive exercise program that incorporates stretching and balance can help reduce and even eliminate back pain.
When an exercise program is followed in conjunction with routine complementary therapy, the prognosis for back pain sufferers is exceptional.
Complementary Therapy
So what exactly is complementary therapy and how do you use it to resolve back pain?
Complementary therapy is any type of treatment that does not involve medication and surgery, which aims to reduce or eliminate imbalances in the body through a mind, body and spirit approach. There are many effective complementary therapies available for chronic back pain sufferers.
Three of the most common are discussed below.
Chiropractic
This is usually the most popular complementary therapy sought out by back pain sufferers. Chiropractic treatment involves the use of spinal manipulation to relieve acute and chronic back pain. There is a large body of research that supports the efficacy of chiropractic therapy in conjunction with a strengthening program. In fact, many doctors actually recommend Chiropractic care over traditional care for back pain.
Massage
Massage therapy is a relaxing and invigorating complementary therapy that does wonders for the entire mind, body and spirit of back pain sufferers. Massage therapy can help improve a person*s flexibility and ability to carry out daily functions by improving blood flow to the limbs. Massage also provides an added mental benefit of being calming and relaxing.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is less commonly used to treat lower back pain, but fans of acupuncture therapies will tell you that it is an effective treatment for eliminating pain. Acupuncture treatment relies on the insertion of thin needles into certain energy points on the body. Many people report relief from lower back pain after a series of acupuncture treatments. There are many proven benefits of acupuncture treatment that have been cited, and most recent studies suggest that it is a good complementary therapy for low back pain.
There are several other complementary therapies that are beneficial for back pain sufferers including magnetic therapy. Regardless of which you choose, you are bound to realize positive results if you combine complementary therapy with a regular strength and conditioning program. No one should suffer chronic back pain. There are healing options available if you know where to turn.

Anyone who suffers the symptoms of epilepsy knows all too well that finding adequate treatment for the disorder is crucial to living a relatively normal life

Medication is one of the most common treatments for epilepsy used today. This intervention is not an actual cure for the disorder but it is useful in controlling seizures that accompany the condition. Though this is one of the treatments of epilepsy that is used to address seizures but it isn’t 100 percent effective.

About 20 percent of patients continue to suffer from seizures no matter what interventions are used. The rest of the epileptic population experiences relief from using this intervention in the treatment of epileptic disorder. For this reason, medication is one of the most common treatments for epilepsy used.

Some individuals have brain surgery to treat the disorder. However, this is one of the treatments for epilepsy that is rarely used. Unlike medication, surgery is used in only a handful of cases. In some cases, doctors can determine a specific area of the brain that is affected. If this area is removed, the condition will most likely improve.

Dietary interventions are treatments for epilepsy that have yielded uneven results. The Ketogenic Diet is used for children who have the disorder and the results have been unpredictable. Adults are not put on the program because there is no evidence that it is useful for mature individuals.

When diet, surgery and medication are not helpful in treating the condition, many turn to alternative treatments for epilepsy. These interventions can be used independently or to supplement another approach. Complementary approaches include a plethora of new age innovations including guided imagery, relaxation and massage therapy.

In addition to new age treatments for epilepsy are some ancient approaches as well. Acupuncture, chiropractic care and yoga are among the older strategies for treating medical conditions that have stood the test of time but have not been fully embraced by the medical community.

The unusual treatments for epilepsy should be administered in addition to regular medical interventions determined by the individual’s physician. Approaches that help the patient relax have been shown to be effective in treating the condition. The complementary approaches in addition to medication and regular doctor visits are currently the most effective treatments for epilepsy available until a cure is found.

Chiropractor Says Space-Age Technology Provides Down-To-Earth Benefits For Patients

Chiropractor Says Space-Age Technology Provides Down-To-Earth Benefits For Patients

What does the Russian space program have to do with chiropractic care? Quite a bit, according to Tom Lenahan, DC.

Dr. Lenahan, who has practiced chiropractic as a second career for 15 years, says he’s seen tremendous breakthroughs in patient healing through the use of electrical stimulation—a concept first researched by the Russians for their space program. The Russian government developed the research because it wasn’t practical to send an entire pharmacy along to keep their space explorers healthy. So, Russian scientists started looking for healing alternatives.

“As they began to explore how electricity works in the body, they realized it’s the body’s primary driver system,” says Lenahan. The researchers found that the body has two electrical components. The first, the nervous system, is like the hard wiring, says Dr. Lenahan. The second wasn’t as well understood.

“They discovered the body has a second component to it,” Lenahan continues. “It is a semi-conducting system in the body, much like your computer. They realized they could stimulate that fascial, semi-conducting system to send a signal to the brain and get it to produce various neuropeptides. This gave them an effective, efficient means of treatment for anything they would run into in space. It’s still one of the primary components of the Russian battlefield first-aid kit.”

It might still sound like a strange fit with chiropractic techniques, but Lenahan insists it isn’t. In fact, Lenahan discovered the power of electrical stimulation in his own quest to find better ways to help his chiropractic patients.

“As I got into chiropractic school, I realized there were many facets that were needed to help the body heal,” says Dr. Lenahan. “In our profession, there are those who are ‘straights’ and those who are ‘mixers.’ I’m the mixer’s mixer. I’ve always sought avenues and technology that would benefit my patients.”

That’s why he was so excited when he found the technology of electrical stimulation. He’s so enthusiastic about it, he speaks on the topic at numerous seminars, including the upcoming International Chiropractic Appreciation Mega Event (ICAME) in Las Vegas in January. While there, he says he’ll give an in-depth scientific presentation on this startling technology.

“It works for acute injuries, but also for the chronic degenerative condition,” he says. “This technology is able to add energy into the system and retard that degenerative process.”

Not only will this technique allow chiropractors to help their patients in ways never thought possible, says Lenahan, but it will also result in a boost in chiropractic practices.

“The…units will let you address really severe pain. They will help you alleviate that and get your patients back in, and keep them coming in,” Dr. Lenahan explains.

“A lot of times we lose patients because the pain is so severe, and they feel they have to go someplace and get drugs. This will help you manage that type of process.”

Chiropractic Medical Necessity

Chiropractic Medical Necessity was originally seen on: www.wellnessinmotionchiropractic.com

Chiropractic Medical Necessity

Third party payers demand documentation to substantiate the medical necessity of a chiropractic treatment. This documentation should support care by providing evidence that a treatment was necessary for relief from a condition and to alleviate a patient’s symptoms. When a third party payer requests records, there are necessary documents and information that must be included for review. These include a patient’s past and present history, consultation form, chart notes and any required x-rays.
The patient’s past and present history are needed. These must explain why the patient sought chiropractic care, the nature of the complaints, the duration of the complaints and whether the patient was involved in a traumatic event. The documentation should explain if the patient has exhibited the same or similar complaints previously, whether there is a family history of illness or injury and if there are contraindications to chiropractic care.
It is important that the chiropractor include a consultation form. This reiterates the reasons the patient sought chiropractic care. The form should explain any previous medical and chiropractic treatment, as well as any prior examinations and test results, if known. This indicates whether patient’s condition is acute or chronic and what treatment, has been provided to the patient, along with the prior treatments outcome. Diagnoses are necessary.
The initial examination findings are important. These findings should describe range of motion, orthopedic and neurological, chiropractic palpation and postural abnormalities. If treatment proceeds beyond a brief course of care, progress examination findings are necessary to show progress between objective examinations.
Although x-rays can be integral in formulating a chiropractic diagnosis and treatment plan, they are not necessary for each patient. An unexplained complaint of long standing, trauma, and age, along with the consultation and examination findings and clinical experience, will determine the need for x-rays.
A patient’s chart notes are vital to assess the necessity of chiropractic care and critical to the review process. They show how the patient has improved or not, whether the objective findings (at least, range of motion, palpation and postural) reveal that the patient is improving. Chart notes also show how a patient’s response to treatment, the reasonableness of care and the treatment plan presented. If a home program was instituted, they tell whether the patient is taking charge of his or her own healthcare and if it appears that the patient’s condition is progressing or being alleviated.

Herbal heat packs

Herbal heat packs

KWD: 12/447 = 2.68%

Herbal heat packs

Herbal heat packs are used for back pain, neck pain, eye strain and to give other forms of relaxation. Commercial herbal packs could cost some money anywhere between $18 and 35 per herbal pack. Herbal heat packs use all kinds of fillers where certain amounts of herbs are added. Fillers for herbal heat packs could be wheat or rice, husks of grains, buckwheat husks, cattails seeds, lavender and other herbs. The beauty of the commercial herbal heat packs is that they are reusable and can be reheated a number of times of times without losing their effectiveness. These herbal heat packs are safe to use. And the ingredients of these commercial herbal packs are entirely organic. On the other hand, making your own herbal heat packs especially if you have your own botanical can be another alternative. All you need to do is assemble different herbs freshly picked from your garden. You can discard them and change them once the effect has lessened.

Herbal heat packs are particularly effective when relaxing. To heat herbal pack, place the pack in the microwave oven for as little time as possible, usually less as a minute depending on the size of the pack. Herbs will lose their effectiveness if heated for a long time especially the mints. If the smell of mint has dissipated, you don’t need to make new herbal heat packs, just dab on essential oils in the pack. The same herbal heat pack can be put in the freezer and used as a cold herbal pack to treat inflammation. You can use the herb catnip as effective herbal heat packs or pillows for relaxation and to relieve congestion. Just hang the plants up to dry, put them into an old pillowslip and use them as a pillow to aid sleep. You can use other herbs for your herbal pillows. Lavender, hops or chamomile are good alternatives. You can use mints herbal pillows to relieve congestion.

Herbal heat packs usually contain the following ingredients:

For the base content: rice and lavender, buckwheat husks, popping corn, other grains, peas or beans and cherry pits.
For the herbal content: lavender which is for relaxation, catnip as sleep aid, peppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus for congestion, garlic for severe congestion, yucca to treat inflammation and other herbal ingredients.

Herbal heat packs are used to treat and are effective for the following symptoms:

o General muscle fatigue
o Sciatic nerve
o Back pain
o Arthritic and rheumatic pain
o Tight, still muscles
o Sinus headaches, backaches, joint discomfort or inflammation
o Warming muscle before exercising
o Muscle spasms in neck or upper back
o Ease pain of migraines and TMJ problems

Migraine Headaches

The article Migraine Headaches is republished from: https://wellnessinmotionchiropractic.com

Migraine Headaches

Nearly 30 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. Migraines occur more commonly in women than in men and typically occur in people aged 15 to 55 years.

A recent study of 171 migraine sufferers, published in the journal Headache, suggests that over-the-counter Excedrin Migraine works better the prescription Imitrex (sumatriptan) for treating migraines. The patients who took the Excedrin Migraine at the onset of a headache experienced less pain after four hours than those who took Imitrex.

This result is probably true for some patients but not all. Excedrin Migraine contains acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. The problem with continual use of this combination is that it often leads to rebound headaches. You should also not take more than two tablets per day and no more than twice per week. This greatly reduces your chances of rebound headaches. If you are experiencing more than two migraines a week, you will need a prescription medication.

Another study found that taking an NSAID, like naproxen, with Imitrex (sumatriptan) works much better than taking either medication alone for migraine headaches. The researchers concluded that the best combination is 50mg of Imitrex (sumatriptan) combined with 500mg of naproxen.

Imitrex (sumatriptan) is in a class of medications called triptans. There are seven triptans currently available in the United States. They are Imitrex (sumatriptan), Maxalt (rizatriptan), Zomig (zolmitriptan), Amerge (naratriptan), Frova (frovatriptan), Relpax (eletriptan), and Axert (almotriptan). Triptans are used only for migraine treatment because they are effective only at relieving the pain caused by migraines. They are slightly useful for some other headache types but not for all headache pain or for any other type of pain.

The current guidelines for migraine headaches state that NSAIDS are first line therapy. That means they should be used first. If someone is allergic, or the NSAIDS do not work, then the triptans are the drugs of choice.
Patients who suffer from migraine headaches should have a treatment plan in the event they get a migraine. This plan should include both preventive medication and medications to stop the migraine. The first line medications, NSAIDs and triptans, are the primary choices.

This study suggests that the NSAID combination of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine is more effective than oral sumatriptan at relieving migraine headache pain, when taken at the onset. More studies should be conducted to confirm these results since patients with headaches that cause vomiting or require the patient to lie down were not studied. This study did confirm that both the combination of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine and triptans appear to be effective first-line therapies for patients with migraine headaches.

I would recommend using a store or generic brand headache medication containing 250mg of acetaminophen, 250mg of aspirin, and 65mg caffeine first, for mild migraines. This combination costs about 4¢ per pill. If this is ineffective, or the migraine is severe, move up to the triptans. They are expensive at about $17.00 per pill. Anyone with a migraine will tell you that cost is not a consideration when it comes to migraine relief.

Feel Better Today With This Great Back Pain Advice (2)

Feel Better Today With This Great Back Pain Advice (2) was first seen on: Wellness In Motion Chiropractic Center, Inc

Feel Better Today With This Great Back Pain Advice

Back pain can be a difficult condition for anyone to live with. People are left in great pain as they attempt to do normal everyday activities that are necessary for survival. Back pain sufferers can rejoice, though, as there are some methods to ease back pain. The following article features tips on back pain.

Staying fit is always important for those who suffer from back pain. While there are many different causes of back pain, there is no doubt that carrying around extra weight on your body certainly doesn't help matters. Shedding some pounds will go a long way toward alleviating your back pain issues.

Both very active occupations and also jobs in which there is minimal movement can be detrimental to your back. Constantly lifting, pushing and maneuvering in odd ways can really hurt your back and you should always pay attention to your movements. Also, not moving often enough can also cause a lot of back pain if you do not take the proper precautions.

Drink lots of water. This helps a lot of issues, including back pain. Water is essential to help keep your joints loose and your discs in your back from becoming compressed. Both of these issues can lead to major back problems, so drinking lots of water everyday can be the most beneficial (and easiest) preventative measure in your arsenal!

Realize that low back pain is common and may not need any treatment at all. Nearly everyone misses work or an important engagement due to back pain at some point during his or her life, but it is usually neither serious nor lasting. Most backaches relieve themselves in about six weeks time, and the only thing necessary is to ride them out.

Keeping the back pain at bay could be as easy as proper support. Buy a special back form for your chair that keeps your spine aligned properly. Use some pillows, either behind your neck and upper shoulder area or in the space between your lower back and the chair.

To help prevent or alleviate back pain, try walking each day. Research has indicated that walking helps relieve back pain, whereas doing specific exercises meant to alleviate back pain may actually make the pain worse. Although your back may hurt, it is important to walk briskly for three hours per week to obtain relief.

Back pain comes in many forms. Make sure you know exactly what type of pain you are trying to relieve. Did you lift something wrong or twist the wrong way? Or are you just getting old? Each different type of pain will need different methodologies.

Avoid wearing shoes without arch support. Shoes that are flat and don't properly support the arching of your feet not only contribute to hurting feet, but also to severe back pain and later even scoliosis. Even if the shoe is not fashionable, consider that it saves you an aching back and keeps you healthy.

Furthermore, back pain can be difficult to live with. When people who have back pain try to do normal activities, they are often met with excruciating pain. Back pain sufferers can ease their pain with the right methods, such as the ones found in the tips of this article. Use them to ease your back pain.

Headaches and Botox Injections

Headaches and Botox Injections was originally seen on: Wellness In Motion Chiropractic Center Blog

Headaches and Botox Injections

Most people are unaware that the use of Botox for the prevention of migraine headaches came about purely by accident. It all happened through the use of Botox by plastic surgeons. Patients undergoing plastic surgery, who were also experiencing headaches, noticed that their injections of Botox helped with their migraine headaches.

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin (a toxin that attacks nerve cells). It was originally approved by the FDA for use in conditions where hyperactivity of muscles was an underlying problem of related health and medical conditions. The theory is that Botox weakens or paralyzes muscles by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is an ester of choline that is thought to play an important role in the transmission of nerve impulses at synapses and myoneural (muscle-nerve) junctions. By inhibiting the release of acetylcholine the nerves cannot cause a muscle contraction, thus relaxing the muscle. Botox is administered by being directly injected into the affected muscles.

There are differing theories as to how Botox works to eliminate migraine headaches, but the exact reasoning remains unclear. One theory is that muscle tension and spasms are a cause of migraines and by eliminating the muscle tension with an injection of Botox it will also eliminate the cause of the headaches. If given Botox before the headache begins it is possible to eliminate the headache before it even starts.

When muscles spasm it can irritate nerves that innervate them. When these nerves send signals to the brain in an increased amount it causes pain and possibly headaches. Botox may affect these nerve cells, inhibiting their transmission, causing a lessening of the perception of pain. Many researches think that migraine headaches are a result of inflammation of blood vessels. However, muscle tension may also play an important role in the cause of headaches.

When researchers test a medication's effectiveness they usually test it through a double-blind study. This means that some patients are given the medication being tested while others are given a placebo. A placebo is an inactive substance, such as sugar, that is given in place of the medication that is being evaluated. Some tests have been performed that did not involve double-blind studies, but showed that Botox could prevent migraine headaches. One double-blind study involving Botox and headaches showed only a small positive effect.

Initial studies may not have shown the full effectiveness of Botox for the prevention of headaches. The injections were not placed in the typical locations of the headache pain, but in areas normally injected during plastic surgery. In subsequent studies, using larger doses and injecting into more specific localities for the headache pain, the results were improved. These tests were concerning migraine headaches. However, with tension headaches, or muscle tension headaches, the studies have shown improved results. This is to be expected due to the weakening or paralyzing nature of Botox on the muscles that are experiencing tension.

When being injected with Botox for the prevention of headaches it may take several weeks before the injection takes effect. For this reason it is usually necessary to have it injected no more often than once every 3 months or so. People that have Botox administered for the treatment of headaches typically need it injected every few months. If there is too long of an interval between injections the headaches may be experienced by the patient.

However, the question arises about the safety of these regular injections of a neurotoxin. Since 1989, when it was first used as a headache treatment, it has appeared to be fairly safe. Most migraine headache medications are taken orally and eventually end up in the blood stream. Because of this common symptoms of migraine headache medication will be dizziness and drowsiness among other symptoms. Since Botox is injected directly into the muscle tissue and does not get absorbed into the blood system as does the typical headache medicine there are fewer side effects. Most commonly, the only side effects of injecting this neurotoxin is pain in the area of injection for a couple of days or drooping of the eyelids for a few days.

Studies are still being performed on this medication and as yet the FDA has not approved it for the treatment of headaches. However, physicians do prescribe it to their patients and if you think you are a candidate to use it you should discuss it with your doctor. If you do not respond to other headache medications it may be something to talk with your physician about. As the studies continue the effects and safety issues involving this medication should become more clear.

Nature’s Oils and Herbal Remedies for Migraine Sufferers

Nature's Oils and Herbal Remedies for Migraine Sufferers

Research shows that women are three times more likely to suffer from migraine than men. Migraine is also more common among

American women than type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, or asthma. More than 80% of people with migraines (called migraineurs)

have other members in the family who have them too. Migraine headaches are the second most common type of primary headache

and they can have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light.
Almost one-fourth of women in their reproductive years experience migraines because during these years, women are building

both their families and their careers --- factors that make them more prone to stress and fatigue. Research also indicates

that migraine is an important issue in women's health. But, fortunately, women can prevent migraines. All they need to do is

seek the solution from Mother Nature.
There are so many different methods to get migraine headache pain relief. Over-the-counter headache pain relief medications

are easily accessible. However, they don't cure headaches and are not without side effects. Over time, any medication can

lose its effectiveness if taken too frequently.
However, would it be better off if migraine headache sufferers could stop using over the counter pain relievers and find some

other method to control their headache pain? Natural alternatives to headache pain relief are just as effective if a person

knows the cause of their headache.
Some natural migraine pain relief herbal remedies are known to prevent or ease a migraine headache. Dried herbs can be used

to make teas or tinctures. Herbal extracts are potent and need to be diluted before use. Capsules come in many herbal

combinations and are readily available at most natural or health food stores. Essential oils such as Chamomile, Rosemary,

Peppermint and Lavender are used to treat symptoms of headaches. Other natural herbal remedies for migraine pain relief

includes:
• Feverfew – Feverfew contains substances that inhibit the release of mood hormones in the brain. For best results, use

fresh feverfew. When this is not available, consume as tea or in capsule form.
• Bay – There have been some doctors who recommend taking feverfew with bay to prevent a migraine headache. You can

often find a combination of these herbs in most health food stores.
• Ginger – Ginger has long been known to relieve and prevent headaches. It is an anti-inflammatory and has substances

that help reduce pain.
• Peppermint – Taken internally or used externally, peppermint can help to relieve a migraine headache. To take

internally, drink peppermint tea. To use externally, mix several drops of peppermint oil with lotion or body oil and massage

onto the temples.
In order to prevent a migraine, you need to identify what causes it. Many foods can trigger an attack. These include cheese,

chocolate, wheat, and caffeine. If you indulge in one of these foods and experience a migraine attack 24 hours later, the

food is most likely a migraine trigger. Other triggers include stress, changes in sleeping patterns, hormonal imbalances, and

changes in altitude.
Natural migraine pain relief remedies can help reduce the length and severity of a migraine headache. Not all natural

migraine cures work for everyone, so try various remedies until you find the ones that work best for you. Finally, learn to

control the triggers to avoid getting a migraine.

Pain In The Neck?

Pain In The Neck?

(NC)-Neck pain is less common than low back pain, which affects about 80 percent of us at some time in our lives. Nevertheless, a huge number of adults - between 38 and 50 percent - have to cope with a sore neck at some point.
Until recently, the cervical spine was largely ignored by researchers. Why? Because neck pain caused far less disability and absenteeism from work than low back pain.
Like the low back, the neck is subject to sprains and strains, joint problems, and disc problems.
When younger people develop acute neck strain it is usually a result of turning awkwardly during the night, or playing a sport such as squash that requires jarring movements. They may also strain a neck muscle lifting things improperly.
Middle-aged people are more likely to develop neck pain as a result of the normal degenerative changes of the discs and joints of the spine.
Whiplash - sprained or torn ligaments and/or muscles - can affect people of any age. In most cases, whiplash is caused by a car accident; if your car is hit from the rear, your head is snapped backward as your body is thrown forward.
Then, of course, is the new category of neck patients that has been emerging: people whose jobs require them to sit for long periods of time in a position that stresses the cervical spine - for example computer work.
As the research on neck pain continues, we'll be learning more about treatment. But right now, we know enough to show neck pain sufferers how to eliminate, or at least reduce, their neck pain with exercise and changes in both their work habits and the way their workstations are set up. Alleviate Back Pain for Restful Sleep

Alleviate Back Pain for Restful Sleep was first seen on: https://www.wellnessinmotionchiropractic.com

Alleviate Back Pain for Restful Sleep

Although the common wisdom is that we spend a third of our lives sleeping, many of us don't get the quantity or the quality of sleep we need. Our hectic lifestyles and the 24-7-365 availability of distractions such as cable television and the Internet can cause us to cut back on the seven to nine hours of sleep that experts recommend we get each night. But even if we shoot for an adequate quantity of sleep, back pain and other problems can prevent us from getting the quality of sleep we need.
When lower back pain, neck pain, snoring, or a sleep disorder prevents us from getting the sleep we need, we accumulate what experts term a "sleep debt." One or two nights of restless or inadequate sleep won't harm us, but a pattern of sleep disruptions can have serious repercussions on our health, ranging from mental fuzziness and mood swings to cessations of breathing and even death. According to the National Sleep Foundation, "Sleep deprivation has been linked to health problems such as obesity and high blood pressure, negative mood and behavior, decreased productivity, and safety issues in the home, on the job, and on the road."
When back pain or neck pain causes sleep disruptions, it may be time to invest in a new mattress. Mattresses that use natural fibers, such as cotton, tend to harden over time, while box springs can begin to sag. A mattress that has outlived its usefulness forces you to sleep in positions that cause or exacerbate lower back pain and neck pain. While a new mattress set is an investment, it is one that will repay you a hundredfold in the form of mental alertness and physical energy that comes from getting restful sleep.
Sleep culprits like neck pain and snoring can often be alleviated with a new pillow. Special posture pillows are available that provide back and neck support, and that can raise your head enough to reduce snoring. A sleep posture pillow may take a period of adjustment, since your body will need to get used to a new position, but the positive effects should kick in within two to three weeks.
Keep in mind that severe snoring can sometimes be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where the tissues at the back of the throat block the airway. This causes the person with sleep apnea to stop breathing for a moment and then awaken. Sleep apnea can cause dozens of awakenings each hour, and can be a life-threatening condition. The bed partner of a person with sleep apnea is often the first to know something is wrong, since he or she can hear the person snoring and hear pauses in breathing, usually followed by a snort or a loud snore.
If you suspect you have sleep apnea, it's important to have the condition properly diagnosed through a sleep study conducted overnight in a sleep lab. Treatment is most often the use of a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine that pushes air through the throat and into the lungs during sleep. Like a sleep posture pillow, a CPAP machine takes some getting used to. But it's a minor adjustment compared with the benefits of restful sleep.

You Don’t Have to Live With Stiff Neck Pain

You Don’t Have to Live With Stiff Neck Pain was first seen on: https://wellnessinmotionchiropractic.com

You Don’t Have to Live With Stiff Neck Pain

Getting quality sleep has, for many, become an elusive goal in the modern day. We work longer hours, take less time off, and try to overcompensate by micromanaging what little free time is available to in order to enjoy all facets of our lives. More and more of us are becoming aware that we are fatigued, and this is further exaggerated by the countless advertisements and commercials that discuss the number of Americans who are not getting good sleep. Many of us wake up daily with sore muscles and stiff necks. Nothing is more tiresome than the combination of exhaustion and neck pain.
Complications caused from lack of sleep can detrimentally affect existing medical conditions such as high blood pressure. Furthermore, improper sleep can be attributed to lowering the immunity system and can cause depression and anxiety disorders in many people. Over a period of time, lack of quality sleep can turn into a serious sleep disorder, so resolving the problem is a necessity.
So are you destined to face the above complications without any form of relief? Thankfully, the answer is no. There are quite a few remedies that can help people to develop the ability to gain restful sleep. Obviously, treatment for any existing medical condition, including stiff neck treatment is necessary. An objective evaluation of one’s environment and behavior is necessary to resolve this dilemma. A healthy sleep pattern is contingent on a few basic rules that can be personalized for any individual. These are a healthy diet, exercise, and most of all, a comfortable sleeping environment.
A healthy diet and exercise program have been proven to not only reduce risks for certain medical conditions, but they are also known to reduce stress and to assist in sleep comfort. Stress is a leading contributor to many chronic health conditions as well as causing an imbalance in sleep patterns. Exercise does not have to be strenuous, a simple walk a few times a week is more than sufficient. A healthy diet also includes the reduction of caffeine and alcoholic intake, as well as reducing food consumption in the evening hours, which has been shown to prohibit some from sleeping better.
A thorough look at one’s sleeping environment is extremely important. Not only should one make sure the room they sleep in is dark and quiet, but also taking a close look at the bed and pillow is extremely important. The mattress should be of good quality and the sheets and blankets clean and comfortable. Pillows are quite important as they support the head and neck during rest. Stiff neck pain is one of the leading causes of disrupted sleep patterns, and finding the proper pillow is essential. Over the years, sleep pillows have become widely recognized as improving sleep comfort due to their design, which invites comfort and proper body, neck, and head alignment. Visco elastic or “memory foam” pillow have been recommended by doctors and chiropractors across the world. Many attribute their new-found and consistent sleep and dream patterns completely to a new sleep pillow.
While poor sleep habits and stiff neck pain are most definitely serious complications to one’s health, by taking the appropriate measures outlined above, you’ll be sleeping like you were meant to and you’ll feel fully rested in no time.

Getting Rid Of Back Pain – Tips To Feeling Better! (3)

Getting Rid Of Back Pain - Tips To Feeling Better!

Back pain can have a negative effect on individuals. The pain can stay in one location of the back, or radiate through different parts, such as the neck or tail bone. The pain can be a dull pain, or one so sharp that it makes movement impossible. If you suffer from back pain, then read the advice in the following article for ways to stop it.

When working at your desk or computer, make sure you sit in the proper posture or purchase an ergonomic chair. Be sure to get up and walk around and loosen your muscles. It is easier to keep them from getting cramped rather than trying to get out the cramps in your back.

If you suffer from chronic back pain and you know that you are going to be driving for a long period of time, be sure that you stop and stretch your legs. This also applies to those whose work requires them to sit for long periods of time. Too much sitting can cause back stiffness, and in turn, back pain.

Having back pain? Get a massage. Getting a back massage will ease the sore tensed muscles in your back, and help to relieve the stress of back pain. Having a 30 minute massage either by a professional or a family member can produce long lasting relief from sore back muscles.

Use over the counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen, to help relieve back pain. Taking oral pain medications can allow you to function somewhat normally when you are suffering from a bout of back pain. Be sure to follow the instructions on the package for best results.

Back pain sufferers sometimes have a lot of trouble getting around, but you should still try to perform activities like swimming in order to relieve the pain. Swimming is really a full-body workout, and it definitely helps to stretch and loosen the muscles in the back. Plus the water is soothing for your back.

Whatever the reason for your back pain, the one thing you do NOT want to do is surgery. You may have no other choice at some point in time, but try every other option first. Chiropractic adjustments, steroidal injections, OTC or prescription pain medications can all be methods to try first to relieve your pain.

If you can, try avoiding tight jeans or pants, if you suffer from chronic back pain. Tight jeans or pants that effect how you sit down, stand, or even walk, are bad for your posture and can cause new pain in the back or worsen pain that you may already have.

Get more vitamin D. Vitamin D has been shown to cause chronic back pain in some cases, but getting more of this important vitamin is an easy thing to do. Have some milk and spend time outside to get the most vitamin D you can. Most people are vitamin D deficient and don't know that, so make sure to talk to your doctor about checking your blood to be sure.

As stated before in the article above, back pain can have negative effects. The pain can stay in one location or radiate in different parts. The pain can also be dull or sharp. If you remember the advice from this article, you might be able to stop back pain.

Chiropractic Care for Migraines

Chiropractic Care for Migraines

Chiropractic care is a safe, non-invasive way to relieve migraine suffering without the use of medication. Chiropractic migraine treatment is not for everyone, but it may be particularly useful for patients who cannot use prescription medication due to other risk factors.

Migraine headaches are idiopathic. This means that despite the last century’s advances in medical science their cause is still unknown. A number of theories exist to explain migraines. They include a possible serotonin deficiency in migraineurs, genetics malformations, and arterial swelling in the cranium.

A common chiropractic theory is that subluxations in the muscles at the base of the skull and the neck cause, or contribute to, the formation of migraine headaches. Subluxations are tense areas in the muscles adjoining the small bones of the upper spinal column. On an x-ray, the bones appear to be in the correct place and medical doctors often miss the tension in the muscles. A chiropractor gently manipulates the spine to relax these subluxations.

Chiropractors offer two varieties of care for migraine patients, straight chiropractic and mixed chiropractic. Straight chiropractic only involves manipulation of the spine and spinal subluxations. Mixed chiropractic care combines traditional manipulation with other complementary techniques. The focus in mixed chiropractic is to reduce overall neck strain and tension.

Researchers at Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Minnesota recently compared chiropractic care with drug therapies for migraines and chronic tension headaches. The study was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. Two hundred eighteen headache patients were given either drug therapy or regular chiropractic care. Both groups reported a 40-50% reduction in headache pain at the end of the study.

Follow ups four weeks after discontinuing all care showed only the chiropractic group still enjoying the pain reduction the treatment initiated. Only 20-25% of the drug therapy patients were still benefiting from their treatment at this follow up.

The Man Who Tastes Shapes

The following blog post The Man Who Tastes Shapes was first seen on: http://www.wellnessinmotionchiropractic.com/

The Man Who Tastes Shapes

Some people see, taste, hear and feel things the rest of us don' t. James Wannerton tastes words: "New York is runny eggs. London is extremely lumpy mashed potatoes." Carol Steen sees every letter with a color: "Z is the color of beer, a light ale."
For Carol Crane, music is felt: "I always feel guitars on my ankles and violins on my face." Other people experience smells when exposed to shapes, or hear sounds inside taste. And for some, numbers have color, sounds have smell, and words have flavor. Music is not only heard, it's seen and tasted--the list goes on.
Neurologist Richard Cytowic explores this surreal world of "synesthesia" in his book, “The Man Who Tasted Shapes. " Synesthesia means joined sensation, and some people are born with two or more of their senses hooked together," explains Cytowic.
The most common form of synesthesia is when a person sees letters in different colors instead of seeing black ink letters as black. Although people differ from each other in what colors the letters are, the colors usually remain the same for each individual throughout their life.
Depending on what food they taste, other synesthetes experience taste as a shape, like a triangle or circle. Another person sees orange when feeling pain.
For New York artist Carol Steen, synesthesia is inspiration. She sees shapes and colors when listening to music or receiving acupuncture—images that she transforms into works of art. "It's like putting on sunglasses and being able to see the world through the sunglasses," she says. Once, when Steen injured her leg while hiking, all she saw was a world bathed in orange.
And, Carol Crane does more than simply hear a concert. She physically experiences each instrument within a different part of her body.
Still another person hears a sound that tastes like pickles. For as long as he can recall, words have triggered the part of Wannerton's brain that responds to tastes and flavors. "I can remember being in a big school assembly hall listening to the Lords Prayer," he says, "and it was while listening to that, I used to get flavor after flavor coming in. It was mostly bacon."
Wannerton says his synesthesia causes him some discomfort in his personal life. "I've had girlfriends with names I couldn't stand saying. Tracey is a very strong flavored name and it's flaky pastry. Whenever I was in her company, that's what I thought of constantly." And at the end of the day, he suffers from sensory overload. But still he doesn't want a cure. "I've had it since I can remember, and taking it away—I wouldn't like the thought of that," he says.
What's Going on Inside the Synesthete's Brain?
Dr. Vilyanur Ramachandran, a neurologist who studies quirks of the brain, was scanning the brain of McAllister, a man who sees music. During the imaging, the music being played stimulates not only McAllister's audio cortex, but also his visual cortex. "The visual area lit up in him," says Ramachandran, "so you know there was neurological activity in the visual region of his brain even though he was only listening to music." McAllister describes it as a "Fantasia-like experience: explosions of color all over the place. A bright flash of lavender getting dimmer and dimmer; now we're going over a pink staircase, some lavender violins. It looks very beautiful."
This is all the more surprising since McAllister is blind! He lost his sight when he was 12, the result of a degenerative eye disease. But he never lost his synesthesia.
Are We All Born with Joined Sensations?
Though scientists can prove synesthesia exists physiologically, they still don't know what causes it. Some researchers think cross-wiring in the brain produces the phenomenon. Another theory is that everyone is born with synesthesia—that we, as infants, experience the world as a jumble of interwoven sensations. Then, as most of us mature, our physical senses slowly become distinct and sharply defined, like images being brought into focus by a camera lens. With synesthetes this separation doesn't happen.
For some people, synesthetic perceptions seem to exist outside the body. Carrie Schultz describes how she sees electric guitar riffs in purple swirls that envelop her.
For others, the awareness is internal, in their "mind's eye." When Glenda Larcombe hears a truck backing up—making a beep- beep-beep sound—she sees the beeps as a series of red dots.
The mingling of senses is often difficult for synesthetes to describe. Larcombe, for instance, said the red dots she sees when she hears beeping are not part of her actual vision. "It's not like I would see a red dot right in front of me—it's in my mind's eye" she says in an interview. She also reports feeling her interviewer's voice, "like a wave, like water, with yellow and orange."
Ex-journalist, Page Getz says "God is blue." She describes headache pain as a kind of greenish-orange, music by the rock group Nirvana as having the taste or sensation of Dr. Pepper, and the color after sex as static silver. She quit her job as a journalist because her editors' word changes often disrupted what she saw as a sentence's natural chromatic progression.
Everyone's Got Blended Senses to a Degree
Psychologist Carol Mills says this sensory-blending ability might be a normal part of all adult brains. "It may go on in all of us even if we don't have synesthesia," said Mills. "For example, if I give you a very high-pitched note and a series of colors and ask you to match one, you are going to pick a light color. If I give you a low bass note, you are probably going to pick a dark color. The difference is when a synesthete hears a low note, they see dark. When they hear a high note, they see a light color."
No firm figures exist for how common synesthesia is. The best estimates range from 1 in 200 to 1 in 20,000 people.

Various Back Pain Causes

Various Back Pain Causes was first published on: Wellness In Motion Chiropractic Center

Various Back Pain Causes

Back Pain causes a lot of inconvenience and hindrance to the normal lifestyle of a person. There are a number of Back Pain Causes, but the two most common causes related to discs are disc injury and degenerative disc. Disc degeneration leads to water content loss that narrows the gap between two vertebrae. This can cause pinching of a nerve and subsequent pain. Bulging discs are generally confused with ruptured discs. While the former condition is normal, the later condition can be serious. Discs may bulge during the day as they carry the body weight, and get back to normal at night when we sleep. Ruptured discs are damaged discs caused by leakage of jelly like substance called nucleus pulposus.

Back Pain Causes – The Middle Back

Among the Back Pain Causes, mid-back pain can be caused by poor posturing or sitting in one position for a long time. A poorly designed chair can also lead to mid-back pain. At the ethereal level, stress, and emotional worries can cause muscle stiffness that leads to pain in the back. Most back pain cases can be attributed to emotional imbalance.

If your pain in the back is started by normal movements like bending or twisting, it could be a result of a slipped disc or a joint problem of the spine. It could also be because of muscle pull in the back. Muscular pain is among the common Back Pain Causes, which can occur while attempting to carry a heavy weight. Pain that is constant around the chest or mid back area could be the result of a fractured rib. The reason could be an injury or long set osteoporosis, which weakens the bones. Kidney infections can also cause pain in the mid-back. The symptoms are pain and discomfort during passing of urine.

One of the common Back Pain Causes is stomach ulcer. Pain occurs in the mid-back that is accentuated after a meal. Strenuous exercise can also cause pain due to injury to the back muscles.

Your back plays a vital role in mobility and needs care and attention through exercise and proper diet.

Natural Ways To Relieve A Headache-Sometimes The Old Ways Work Better

Having frequent headaches can range from being a nuisance to affecting your ability to function. Modern medicine's typical response is to shove pills down your throat and see what happens. If the first pills don't work then new pills are tried, and so on until you are able to find some relief. However, there are also some natural ways to relieve a headache so you won't have to pop pills.

A warning is in order before we get to any of those methods: Nothing in this article is meant to be medical advice. You should always consult with your doctor before trying to treat any health condition, including headaches. If your doctor has prescribed medication, then you should always take it unless they instruct to stop taking it. Okay, and now onto the good stuff!

Cold or heat therapy is one of the oldest natural ways to relieve a headache. Placing a cold pack on the head, face or neck can lessen the severity of a headache, but don't use anything that's too cold as that can make the headache worse. Heat can be applied in the same way, and excessive heat should be avoided as well. Everybody is different, so you may need to see which temperature works best for you. How this works is still the topic of discussion, but what really matters is that it does indeed work, not how it works.

The body is covered with pressure points that affect other parts of the body. You can find pressure points that will help alleviate headaches. They can be found on the temples, the bridge of your nose, the hairline, the crook of your arm, your back and certain parts of your feet. Using a bit of trial and error, you should be able to zero in on the areas that bring you the most relief; however, if you want to be more precise then you can find information that shows you exactly where to apply pressure.

Aromatherapy can work wonders on your headaches, but you need to be careful. The reason is that some people are highly sensitive to certain scents, and they could end up making your headache worse. On the other hand, there are sure to be some aromas that soothe and clam you and lessen your headache pain. Some of the more popular scents for the treatment of headaches include lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint.

Staying in good health isn't always the easiest thing to do, but it can definitely help control your headaches. After all, what could be better than preventing them in the first place? Make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day, eat right, exercise on a regular basis, practice stress reduction techniques and get a good night's sleep.

The cool thing about all of these natural ways to relieve a headache is that they can be done by just about anyone, and you don't have to worry about popping pills and adding chemicals to your system.

A Breakthrough for Chiropractic Patients

'Insight Subluxation Station' provides color scans of problems and progress
(ARA) - People under chiropractic care often wonder: "Why do I have to keep coming back if I'm pain free?" or "How do I know I'm getting the proper amount of adjustments?" Thanks to a breakthrough in technology, however, these questions no longer arise for patients in chiropractic offices that are equipped with a new tool known as the Insight Subluxation Station. These patients can now see for themselves, as their care progresses, that they're getting the proper number of adjustments, and will also be able to better understand why pain-free does not always equate to "problem solved."
This advance, which offers major advantages for patients and chiropractors alike, provides patients with tangible, objective visual evidence of the problems they sought help for and how their treatment is progressing. The Subluxation Station scans for, detects and provides clear, color-coded scans of the patient's spinal misalignments (subluxations) and clearly demonstrates their effects on the patient. These are indicators that, because they are located in muscles, nerves and soft tissue, cannot be seen on x-ray.
Developed by the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance or CLA, a privately held company devoted to advancing chiropractic among the public and within the profession, the Insight is rapidly becoming as indispensable as x-ray machines themselves. This equipment helps the chiropractor implement definitive care for the individual patient, monitor progress, and reassure patients of that progress. The color scans, viewed over time, are like snapshots of the effects of accumulated stress. With them, the doctor gains a visual story of what has been happening in a given patient's life that is affecting their body.
Dr. Patrick Gentempo, co-founder and chief executive officer of the CLA, was instrumental in the development of this new technology and equipment. He reports: "Now patients no longer need to rely solely on the doctor, but can see for themselves where there are abnormal nerve patterns leading to a loss of their health potential. With periodic re-testing they can also see how care has affected the picture, and if they still need attention."
Many patients ask, "Isn't absence of pain, or increased mobility, a sign of complete recovery?" says Dr. Gentempo. To the contrary, he relates: "We've all heard of someone who felt perfectly fine the day before they suffered a fatal heart attack. The reality is that whether or not obvious symptoms are present, there can still be subtle communication gaps in the central nervous system. Until the Insight scans show that the pattern of nerve function is in a healthy state, the patient will need continued chiropractic adjustments."
According to Dr. Gentempo, since only a small portion of the nervous system, which is the master control center of the entire body, is used to experience pain, it is critical that we assess as much of it as we can. "We developed the Insight so that patients can see, and understand for themselves, why continued treatment is necessary. The purpose of this technology is to improve communication between doctor and patient, and, ultimately, help motivate people to incorporate chiropractic into a wellness lifestyle for the whole family, like eating healthy foods and exercising," he says.
Insight Subluxation Station uses three safe, pain free and effective tests. It performs the SEMG (surface electromyography) scan to measure the amount of electrical activity in the muscles, thermal scanning to measure skin temperature along the spine, and the digital inclinometer to measure the range of motion of the spine. These three proven technologies are quick and easy to perform, and are uniquely able to show the results in clear, color-coded visual images that are easily understandable by the patient.
Another common question is if we have no pain, how can we know it's time to see a chiropractor? Says Dr. Gentempo: "In today's fast-paced environment it is normal that people have physical, chemical and emotional stresses beyond the individual's ability to remove or even adapt to. As a result, subluxations and nerve disturbance are extremely common. There is abundance medical and scientific evidence that even a small amount of nerve disturbance or pressure can cause altered nerve function. Thus, I can't overemphasis the importance of regular trips to the chiropractor, even before symptoms appear, to check for spinal subluxations. This is preventive, so that an individual may optimize their potential for good health and at the same time prevent future health challenges before they become severe."
Spinal subluxations (misalignments) can be present for months, or even years, before a patient experiences any symptoms. Explaining how this is possible Dr. Gentempo uses this analogy: "If the front end of your car is out of alignment, you can still drive. However, in time the misalignment will cause wear and tear on the tires, and eventually a blowout will occur. In the human body, heavy lifting, improper movements, sitting too long or in the wrong kind of chair, or even emotional stresses can result in abnormal positioning of the vertebrae and nerve disturbance."
To use another analogy, he says: "It's like too much stress going into an electrical circuit in your house, and as a result the circuit breaker is tripped. Let's say that the circuit goes to your refrigerator. The food in the refrigerator will now spoil. Most people, and many other health professionals, would see the 'spoiled food' in their refrigerator and think that the refrigerator was the problem! They may even try and replace the spoiled food with good food -- only to find that this good food will again spoil. The chiropractor, on the other hand, seeks to turn on the power that goes through the refrigerator (the human body) and thus deal with the cause of the problem rather than its end results."
When symptoms of subluxation of the spine finally occur they can appear as back or neck pain, but also as other seemingly unrelated problems, Dr. Gentempo notes. "There may be decreased immune function and less vitality in general," he says. Unless the spinal misalignment, or subluxation is corrected, Dr. Gentempo advises, "The body will be unable to properly heal itself and deterioration will progress, until it may be very serious."
Dr. Christopher Kent, who co-founded the CLA with Dr. Gentempo, is one of the country's most respected chiropractors, well-known as a researcher and author. He believes that the Insight technology and equipment will help not only patients but also the doctors who utilize it. "Too many people still view chiropractic as solely a treatment for back and neck pain and other musculoskeletal problems," he says. "They mistakenly believe the chiropractor should simply 'crack the back' and solve their immediate problem. This misconception is shortchanging themselves as well as the profession. Chiropractic is actually a network of highly educated professional healthcare providers who got into this profession to help people get and stay well. They want to see all members of the family, newborns through seniors, achieve the optimal health and wellbeing that is their birthright. Chiropractic is about understanding the marvelous human body's ability to heal itself and removing all obstacles to that healing. This includes making necessary lifestyle changes, and having regular chiropractic care in order to correct spinal misalignments when they occur."
Chiropractors today have in fact earned a newfound respect, as millions of people spread the word about how they have been helped. As a result of this encouraging grassroots movement, chiropractors have increasingly become the first line for family health care services. Says Dr. Gentempo: "At the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance we are dedicated to helping chiropractors and their patients create a new paradigm for health and wellness. Because it provides evidence and accountability, the Insight Subluxation Station is a giant step forward towards this goal, for the benefit of patients and for the profession."

Facts vs Myths About Back Pain

Facts vs Myths About Back Pain

Let’s begin by learning some facts in order to separate truth from myth with regards to back pain. First of all, under one percent of acute lower back pain is the result of a serious infection or condition like cancer or a spinal injury. For those under 50, the rate is even lower. Back pain is the number one disability for those under age 45. And it runs second, after the common cold, as the top reason for visiting a healthcare provider in the United States.

“There is nothing really wrong with you.” Myth! Chronic pain sufferers report that doctors generally tell this to about 90 percent of them and it is incorrect. In reality, the majority of low back pain cases or some 90 percent generally come from an unknown cause, like an infection or a particular injury. And the duration of the pain runs generally from four to six weeks. “People don’t die from chronic back pain.” Wrong! The pain combined with depression and anxiety in long-term cases places sufferers at risk for suicide, which does happen from time to
time.

“Most back pain requires surgery.” Myth! On the contrary, under two percent of patients with back pain need surgery. However, back pain is the third top reason for surgery. “Only a small percentage of workers suffer back pain on the job.” Wrong! The top occupational hazard in the USA is back pain.

“Lie down and rest for back pain.” Au contraire. Contrary to popular believe, bed rest can hinder recovery. Health care providers recommend remaining active to decrease down time for patients.

“Men suffer back pain more than women.” Not! With regards to gender issues and back pain, it is a myth that men suffer back pain more than women. In reality, the only main difference is with secondary pain to disk disorders during middle age. However, with regards to race, low back pain is reported more frequently among Caucasians than other races including African Americans. “If a patient’s pain description lacks a regular, consistent pattern, it’s probably imagined or exaggerated.” Myth! No two people, no two cases are totally 100 percent identical. Activities, events, pain and people themselves vary from day to day and there is no 100 percent correct way to describe pain in words to fit a perfectly accurate diagnosis.
